need a grip

10 set goals you think will make you feel more accomplished, satisfied, happy
20 make choices believing they are important
30 reach them, but realize they weren't important at all and didn't work
40 feel like crap for being so naive, having sacrificed whatever for naught
50 hibernate 5000
60 goto 10

on insecurity

One of the stupid, frustrating things about insecurity, is that you feel you'll never be able to manage it well enough; there's a persistent backdrop of fear that something (usually completely inadvertently) will trigger it and knock you off your game.  And that fear saps hope, drains inspiration, destroys passion.  And it sucks.

authenticity vs managing expectations

This came across my desk today.  Resonates.  Capturing it here to help process/integrate.

The more critical you are of others, the more difficult it is for you to reveal your true self to the world around you. When you have not allowed others to be less than perfect, does it not only follow that you cannot be less than perfect? And since you know you aren't perfect, how can you possibly reveal yourself? Creating an environment for authenticity requires that we give others the space to be authentic as well. We intuitively know that we can't require something of others that we haven't required of ourselves.

Couple observations, no particular order.
1. i recognize i used to be very critical of others, especially late teens through 20s as a defence mechanism.  i even took pride in it: i recall at one point feeling pumped about learning that a friend's friend liked being around when I was there because i said funny/clever things at his expense (though usually to divert attention from my own shortcomings).  looking back, i was a jackass.  NV, since you are one of the very few people I know know about this mostly anonymous blog, I can apologize here.  I am sorry for having been a jackass.  you can quietly accept it or bring it up next time you're in town, i'd prefer the latter to clear the air.
2. the para starts with an attribution that I don't quite agree with.  yes of course if you are critical of others it's a very bad move, strategically, to reveal your own faults because you surround yourself with people who likely want the satisfaction of taking you down.  rather, i suspect it is very difficult to reveal your true self because you are ashamed of it, which is why you are so critical of others (correlation not causation).
3. feels like i grew up with one parent telling me i'm perfect and the other constantly reminding me i'm a danger toward others and indirectly blaming me for being inconvenient or worse. As a result, i learned to be very cynical and trust no one, not even myself, about my ability (or inability) to decide what I'm good at, what I'm good for, and what is good enough for me/others.
4. I think over time I've swung too far the other way from where I was in point 1 above.  Wanting to be perfect at every new thing quickly left me wanting positive feedback/approval from others.  inevitably i would hit a point where natural talent isn't enough to keep the compliments coming (external motivation), i would start doubting my ability to progress, and would start criticizing my ambitions maybe like a drinking problem - i'd get drunk on attention, but after a while my judgment would get cloudy and I'd lose sight of what I was really doing it for, followed by regret for having gotten drunk (on attention for whatever it was while it lasted) in the first place.  I'm aware of that pattern now, and am practicing being mindful of my emotions so as not to go down that rabbit hole.  back to main thread in point 4, I think I've swung too far the other way and my go-to defence mechanism is now to chronically undersell my abilities, to the point where I actively complain about not being good enough. it works to get support and attention in the short term, when I surprise people with my real abilities - but my ability to perform is dependent on their ongoing compliments, which eventually run dry and which I have trouble deciding whether I can accept them as genuine or not (see point 3).  i have learned it also makes people feel stupid for trying to help me when i clearly didn't need it.  feels really inauthentic, but keep doing it because of point 3.
5. i recently made a conscious decision to clear the air with someone I made really uncomfortable a few years ago.  i was drunk on attention (point 4) and when that ceased, I started being a real jackass (point 1). it lasted a few months. I knew I had to apologize, and did shortly thereafter, but it still bothered me - i didn't know what to ask forgiveness for.  anyway, just yesterday I took an opportunity to come clean, shed the defensive BS and admit the awkward truth about my emotional state at the time.  it went reasonably well, and the authenticity feels good.

Not sure where this leaves me, or what's next.  One thing is for sure, the little chances I've been taking in the past year to be increasingly authentic have been paying off.  Admitting my core inadequacies little by little takes the pressure off, and I'm getting better at not being so aggressively defensive all the time about the lesser things. I am trying to be more realistic in my abilities and interests, and more confident in being able to sustain them.  I look forward to the day I'll can allow myself confidently and realistically to just be me, allow make others comfortable to be "just" who they really are around me, and be a true friend respecting our honest strengths and accepting of our  weaknesses.  That is probably the best gift I could ever give myself.
That and sleep.  Good night and thanks for reading.

On ambition

Having some spare time, I have been reading on what successful people do, setting effective goals etc.  Nothing particularly surprising or new to me.  Though it all sounds great, I just don't see any of it applicable to me, as I haven't found my ambition.  So I googled "how to find ambition", and did an online ambition test.  Unsympathetically, it summarized my results as follows:

Strengths:
· No strengths detected (ouch)
Potential strengths:
· You have a moderate level of self-efficacy (is that all)?
Limitations:
· You have very little, if any, professional aspiration (mostly content where I am, I can accept that)
· You have very little, if any, personal aspiration (I still feel stuck fundamentally)
 · You did not have a family environment that was very supportive of ambition (hmmm)

I really need to think about that last line - as a father I don't want my boys to fall into the same self-effacing driveless attitude toward life (if they are thus naturally inclined).

As for general ambition tips, it isn't much help (d-uh).
First heading: "Write your aspirations down".  Start by putting your goals, what's most important to you, on paper, and start breaking it down it says. But that's the core of the issue: I have no goals!

Next heading: "Lacking passion? Dig deep".  What makes me smile?  where am I when I daydream?  what was I when playing pretend games as a kid?  Besides reverse engineering the quality principles built into a well-designed product, the occasional joke and kid's behaviour/accomplishment/attitude, the answer is : Nothing. (surprised?)

Next heading: "Take life by the horns". "Deal with issues that need change head on - the longer you wait, the less empowered you will feel."  I don't know how less empowered I can feel than already.  MOVING ON.

The remaining headings: "Surround yourself with supportive and ambitious people", "Plan for potential obstacles", "Reward yourself", "Remind yourself regularly", "Boost your confidence", "Motivate yourself to persist" - are all good (and very common) tips, once you're willing to take life by the horns that is.  And I'm just not there - at least I don't see how that would change anything for the better.

There is one good takeaway in all this - I need to remember to create a more challenge-rewarding environment for my kids.  And that is something I can do.

purpose, character, aptitudes

being doing, nay obsessing over things recently.  my ambition is on hold, embarking on seemingly random mental jogs/startups, but i can feel something winding up (like the calm before a storm). Today i turned to astrology numerology and palm reading etc, to see if it provides any insight (but mostly for distraction).

Here then, (for my future reference/entertainment), is a mash of various results from various on-line tests (no warrant of applicability/accuracy/relevance implied) and how close they are.

head line: You have courage in voicing your opinion. You overcome your nervousness and are very determined in your work. If you are passionate for some cause, you fight till the end for it. You are a sensitive person. You approach new things with caution. Even though you may be capable, you lack self-confidence. You tend to undervalue your capabilities and talents.

(surprisingly accurate)

heart line: You are a very selfish lover. You live for yourself and care little for the people around you. When your partner commits a mistake, you can be very unforgiving. If you like someone, you stop at nothing to get that person in your life. But after winning your love, your devotion and attention level drops like a brick. You are emotional in love. You will have some sad moments of disappointment in your love life. You will have an inconsistent love life filled with casual flirtations here and there. You are likely to be cold and less passionate. You are calculating in all matters of love. Your head rules your heart.

(mostly rubbish)

life line: You have an inflexible nature. Your somewhat serious nature makes life difficult for you at times. At times, problems come later on in your life because you did not address them at first. A change in attitude will help you. You are likely to have some phases of ill health in your life. You have strong will power. Your body will show more resistance in times of ill health. You are more brainy than brawny. There were some restrictions on you in your childhood in school/home. You are likely to live two lives totally different from each other at the same time. You may face times of trials and tribulations during the course of your life.

(somewhat)

marriage line: You will have a happy marriage. There will be lots of love between you and your life partner. You will get involved in serious relationships (before marriage) in which you will contemplate marriage. There will be some influence which will come into your life after marriage. You are not likely to get married early in life.

Birth order?

Had a thought provoking discussion with my mom last night. Apparently first born is supposed to be the hero, successful and achievement-oriented, second the rebel challenging authority and the way things are, third invisible quietly getting things done without undue drams or attention, fourth the clown. Apparently typical, but by no means a rule.
Being the older of two kids, those roles were not so clearly distributed. I have some of the characteristics of the hero and the rebel, seeing the potential for improvement everywhere and striving to implement it, while letting somebody else be the hero.
Armed with that awareness (and of related factors I won't publish), I can turn some of that energy inward and be even more effective (and I dare say maybe even more pleasant to some). But before wearing it outdoors, I have to decide how well this shoe fits.

Generation Squeeze

yup, sometimes I too feel stuck between the boomers who wouldn't give us their jobs and don't want to look after our kids.  Rebound effect still rippling from the WWII I suppose.

the chattering mind

Woke up at 3am obsessing over a work issue.
Started writing it down, and had to compose it as an email to myself at work.
I hope that will put my mind at ease and I can go back to sleep. Then again, part of me feels like its time to go for a run (its 540am and the birds are starting to chirp). I'm going to overrule that impulse.
Now I'm getting hungry.

sigh.
The day ahead is not promising to be a good one.

Change - or not (yet)

When I left the office, the earliest batches of project phase 1 were starting to be finalized, the final batches of phase 1 of the project were being launched, and phase 2 of the project was being planned.

When I left the office, our program funding was in its sunset year and a proposal had been submitted for another few years.

When I left the office, our enabling authority (the legislation that allows/mandates us to do what we do) was several years past its "mandatory" review date (rumour had it that the minority government at the time feared the legislative review process would become a can of worms).

When I left the office, we had a minority Conservative government.

...

Here I am now, nine months later, about to go back to work.

I'm not sure how reassuring it is, if at all, to have learned last week (at lunch with some of my office mates) that nothing, not a single thing, has changed. Except that we have a majority Conservative government and somehow we still had an operating budget.

Not sure though how long that funding (or our legislated requirement to do our work) will last, if this is any indication of the secretive governing mindset here...

Reframing

I generally concentrate on doing things "right", which I've come to realize isn't easy to sell when people are more typically looking for (and consequently businesses needing to do) things that are first, faster, cheaper, and/or just a little bit better, than the competition.

I.e., too easily distracted by the potential to do what is actually needed.

Afterthought: in an effort to be honest and respectful of others, I'm also often overly self-critical. This is not particularly helpful or even appropriate in a milieu that expects/ assumes you are always trying to sell yourself. it usually passes as unnecessary self-pity, false modesty, or veiled criticism when really, all I am wanting to do its improve myself. recognizing that it is socially counterproductive, I'm going to be mindful of this going forward (except maybe on this blog of course).

Random thoughts

I've been having a lot of interesting (to me) realizations this week. I think it's coming together under the pressure of looking after the (mostly) well behaved kids while trying to get pet projects completed before going back to work next week, while under the effects of sleep deprivation brought on by night terrors, a brief hospital stay, and family members succumbing to little viruses all at the same time.
Of course, now that I have time to write about them, I can't remember any of them.

communication tools vs communication skills

The two young contrators painting my house are outside on their lunch break, casually minding the texting/surfing on their respective cell phones.

Makes me think that, with all the communication tools that technology has given us, we may be losing the ability to actually communicate.

Aside: And here I am, blogging about it rather than getting out there and getting to know them/anyone.

Or, communication tools have allowed us the luxury(?) of being able to be more specific about who and what we want to talk with and about (and listen to). If that's so, are we any further ahead?

realization

Probably deafeningly evident to those who know me, but I just moved a Johari muntin over a bit to my advantage tonight.
I am a (slightly obsessive) tweaker. I am driven to know how things work, be it in politics, regulation-making, sewing machines, computers, lighting levels in a room, musical instruments, circulatory system in the eye, etc., just to the point I can do it "right", understand or use it well enough to teach someone else, and/or fix it, to make it that much easier for everyone/me to use and logical for everyone else to figure out.
Which is probably why I get too involved in some things.   By "too involved" I really mean to the annoyance of those who've made a career out of it for asking too many questions (even more when their explanations smell like BS - no offense, Dr. R); to the jealous displeasure of those who've made it their life's mission to understand/do something I pick up even better in just a few hours/weeks (sorry Bree); and to the expense of those who have to redo stuff until it meets what I believe is (should be) the appropriate standard of workmanship (reno contractors, you know who you are).
But when the conquest is over, I tend to seek out other problems to fix/things that need tweaking.
So, how can I best turn this drive for learning and improving into a career:  Detective? Teacher? Researcher?  Troubleshooter? Judge? Supreme benevolent dictator?

professional vs social recognition: and/or?

I'm acting two levels above my substantive position these days.
Uncomfortably busy, in that I am not "in control" of my workload - I'm constantly being chased after for approving this and that and responding to management requests, all of which is pretty much brand new to me, and I suspect I've left a few of the more quiet (and hopefully but probably not less important) files behind. Combined with lack of sleep and preoccupation with renovations that are going as should be expected, I've caught myself avoiding social situations and public image-making opportunities, probably out of concern of making a stuttering fool of myself. So today I forced myself to walk around more and take ownership of my current responsibilities in a hopefully not too transparent or suspiciously desperate attempt at claiming the requisite status.
But (throwing grammatical caution to the wind), that led to the most bothersome part of my day: trying to thank one of my colleagues during her farewell luncheon, and not being able to get a word in edgewise above the general din of miscellaneous conversations of the people I am supposedly leading. Another painful reminder that pursuing rank is counterproductive to social relationships/status. The words "It's lonely at the top" have never rung more true :(

Regardless, tomorrow's a new day and a quieter one at that. I'll have more time to talk to people, get things done, and continue building relationships one step at a time.

hedonic adaptation

This makes a lot of sense:
The hedonic treadmill, also known as hedonic adaptation,
is the tendency of a person to remain at a relatively stable level of
happiness despite changes in fortune or the achievement of major goals.
As a person makes more money, expectations and desires rise in tandem,
which results in no permanent gain in happiness.

-Chris Hall's status on facebook earlier today
This also explains the usual tendency for scope creep in projects.
(Chris is a high school friend of mine and currently teaches languages at a Montreal CEGEP when he's not busy observing the world)

dimensional units

so I was thinking on the bus home today that there are units for each of the regular 4 dimensions (depth, width, height, time), mass (not the sunday type) and charge, plus the compound units (functions of the aforementioned 6 like speed, force, power, field, etc. But what about something unmeasureable, like intentionality?
I propose that intentionality be recognized as another basic unit, which can form the basis for other compound units:
intentionality x desire = will
intentionality x enthusiasm = motivation
intentionality x strategy = plan
intentionality x (plan + resources) = mission
etc
I came to realize today (save your slow learner jokes) that knowing/understanding your intentions is essential to feeling like you're doing the right thing, and finding a compatible job makes it easier to harness your true intentions and the integrity and conviction will speak for themselves, making it easier for you to be successful in your own work.
at least that's what I presume most self-help books talk about.
this can be identified (even programmed) through meditation/prayer/astral-planing, and seems to work. what struck me though today was that such meditation somehow influences the intentions, moods and/or dispositions of others towards your intentions and can positively affect your ability to pursue your intentions, making intentionality another basic unit of measurement, albeit intangible.

ok, rambling wasn't my intention... it seemed clearer at the time, really.

swimming against the current

Had an epiphany/d-uh moment over the weekend after accumulation of numerous rejected improvement recommendations at work:
Arguments are won with the heart, not facts.

I've always regarded the pursuit of knowledge, information, truth, and consideration of the bigger picture as fundamental, and assumed most people would share that interest in continuous self-/improvement.

Unfortunately, (most of) the rest of the world doesn't seem to work like that. Usually, the rest of the world (at least part of my work environment) seems to value collaboration and conventionalism in general. Relevance of any supporting facts presented is generally not (well?) understood, and many openly revel in being able to point out your errors and discredit you. It can become a competition of show-uppance. It's also very difficult for someone to accuse you of not being kind and considerate, regardless how mistaken their direction.

Looking past the probable negative outcomes of people's intentions and effectively reguiding their efforts is an ability I clearly have yet to learn to fake, never mind develop.

career coaching

I recently won a free career coaching session. Not sure what that entails, nor am I sure whether I'll be able to avoid digressing into philosophical over-analysis use it optimally.

Kinda reminds me of the stupid "Choices" program our guidance counselor offered in high school. It suggested completly random jobs like architect, politician, teacher, garbageman, hotel concierge, helicopter pilot and heavy-equipment operator. When I asked the guidance counselor for actual "guidance" (silly me), she merely reflected: Well, tell me what you want to do and we can do the test again with that in mind. Though subconsciously sensible, it's hardly a logical response and certainly did not impress my concretish way of looking at things (which inevitably led me down an engineering path). Thing is, dealing with imperfections, inconsistencies, public ignorance/apathy and other such irritants on a daily basis is a never-ending battle. On that, can anyone tell me how that finger-in-the-failing-dyke fable ends?

social graces

I believe shaking hands is an important formality to get right (i.e., firm, not limp dead fish, nor osteoporous-bone-crushingly strong either) when I meet someone, especially in a professional context. Once past the initial formality with colleagues I usually find it awkward though, sometimes even suspicious they're still trying to size me up or win me over like a politician.
is it just me?

mosaic effect

interesting exercise to describe oneself anonymously (user profile on wikipedia), and then to decide whether to cross-reference yourself in your blog, considering that accelerates the aggregation of information that will eventually reveal your "secret" identity.
